Both have their place. Here's a brutal honest matrix for when to use each.

Sticky bars are unobtrusive. Popups are demanding. Choose your tool based on visitor intent and offer urgency.

Use a sticky bar when

  • Your offer is low-commitment (newsletter signup, small announcement).
  • You want persistent visibility without interrupting the page.
  • You're targeting blog readers or top-of-funnel traffic.
  • You expect mobile to be 60%+ of your sessions.

Use a popup when

  • Your offer is high-value or time-sensitive.
  • You're catching cart abandoners.
  • You can deliver real value in 5 seconds of attention.
  • You can credibly limit the popup to specific pages and frequencies.

The brutal truth

Popups outconvert sticky bars 2–3× when conditions are right. They also damage trust 2–3× faster when conditions are wrong. The difference between the two outcomes is almost entirely about respecting visitor attention.
